Recently, our team at Sterling Impreglon Asia was called upon for an urgent repair job on a set of periscopic shafts that had suffered severe damage due to corrosion pitting. The damage was so extensive that it had begun to affect the operational capability and efficiency of our client’s equipment. Time was critical as the customer could not afford prolonged downtime while waiting for a new replacement part. This is where our proprietary Brush Plating process became the ideal solution for fast and efficient repair.
Step 1: Damage Assessment and Preparation
We dispatched a team of seasoned technicians to the site to survey the extent of the damage. By carefully examining the corrosion pitting on the shafts, we were able to determine the best course of action. To prepare the damaged areas for plating, our technicians widened (but did not deepen) the corroded areas, ensuring that the surface was optimal for a successful repair.
Step 2: Masking and Cleaning
Once the damaged sections were prepared, we carefully masked the surrounding areas to prevent any chemical leakage during the Brush Plating process. A thorough cleaning of the pitted surfaces followed, ensuring that all dirt, oil, and impurities were removed. This step is crucial for the adhesion of the plating material.
Step 3: Rebuilding the Damaged Areas with Brush Plating
We then applied our proprietary Brush Plating technology, beginning with a layer of copper to rebuild the corroded areas. The copper plating restored the damaged sections back to their original dimensions, allowing the shafts to regain structural integrity.
Step 4: Finishing and Quality Assurance
Once the copper was applied, we carefully ground down the plated areas to ensure they were level with the rest of the shaft. A final layer of nickel was added to cap off the repair, providing enhanced durability and protection. This nickel layer ensures that the shaft is restored to a condition that is as good as new.
To complete the job, we conducted a dimensional check to verify that the repaired shafts were within the tolerance range requested by the customer, ensuring their optimal performance.
